Week 3 English Didactics

Hello everyone! Welcome to this week's blog.

At the beginning of the class, we watched a video about the Grammar Translation Method and The Direct Method and summarized it.

In the Grammar Translation Method, the Students learn deductibly by rules. I would like to share with you some of the techniques of this method:

  • Translation from one language to another by reading passages, an example:  you can read a passage from a novel or any book.

  • Fill in the blanks.

  • Use synonyms and antonyms.

  • Reading comprehension questions: reading different sets of questions: The questions will help the students to think creatively and critically.

The Direct Method teaches in a deductive way, the student learns by being immersed in the language, through images, contexts, and practices, all focused on the target language. These are some of the techniques:
  • Realia/drawing of pictures: demonstrate the lesson.

  • Paragraph writing: the student can apply what they have learned.

  • Using complete sentences: helps to acquire new vocabulary.

  • Contextualization: help the students to learn in a real-life situation, in their context.

After talking about the Grammar Translation Method and Direct Method, we learned about a new method, The Audiolingual Method or also known as The Army Method.

The Audiolingual Method it is also known as the "Army Method" because it is similar to how the military taught languages in World War II. Soldiers had to learn foreign languages quickly for better communication. This method focuses on repeating things and it worked well for teaching language skills quickly.  Also, this method is known as The Listen and Repeat Method.

SWOT

Strengths:

  • Pronunciation matters
  • Simple to use.
  • Listening and speaking skills improve.
  • Error correction is important.
  • Memory is addressed.

Weaknesses:

  • Reading and writing are not emphasized as much as listening and speaking.
  • The method is kind of flat (not diverse).
  • Students may be discouraged.

Opportunities:

  • Bring to class relevant topics to be used in the drills.
  • A good way to teach pronunciation.
  • A way to get to know your classmates.

Threats:

  • If the teacher pronounces a word in the wrong way, the students will learn it that way.

Finally, to put into practice what we had learned, the teacher did an activity with the whole class, it was a lot of fun and we were able to learn by playing.

I hope you have learned a few things this week, see you next week.
