DESCRIBING LEARNERS

  Hello everyone, welcome back!

This week, we experienced a break from our usual classes and instead, we read a presentation on campus virtual, focusing on the topic of the week.

Here are some of things I learned :

DESCRIBING LEARNERS

To describe our learners, we should consider the following aspects:

Age

Learner differences

Language levels

Their motivation

Background

AGE

YOUNG CHILDREN

Children up to the ages of 9 or 10 learn differently compared to older children, adolescents, and adults in the following ways:

They respond to the meaning even when they do not grasp each word individually.

They frequently learn in an indirect manner rather than through direct instruction.

Their comprehension stems from what they observe, hear, and importantly, from what they have the opportunity to touch and engage with.

They find grammar concepts difficult to grasp.

They generally display enthusiasm.

 ADOLESCENTS

They are often labeled as troublesome students; yet, when they understand the purpose of the activity, they typically excel.

When they are interested in the subject, they are usually dedicated and enthusiastic learners.

They are continually seeking to define their identity and boost their self-esteem.

They seek approval, often from their peers.

ADULTS:

They can think in abstract terms.

They have a wealth of life experiences to reference.

They have specific expectations regarding their learning journey.

They usually exhibit more discipline.

Teachers can leverage adults' experiences to design a variety of activities.

They possess a distinct understanding of the subject matter they are learning.

LEARNER DIFFERENCES

  • Multiples intelligences
  • Learning Styles (VARK, KOLB)
  • Characteristics of good learners.

Good learners Characteristics:

  • Is a willing accurate guesser.
  • Is willing to make mistakes.
  • Enjoy grammar exercises.
  • Has an above-average IQ
  • Begins learning in childhood.

LANGUAGE LEVELS

Basic user: A1 (beginner), A2 (Elementary)

Independent user: B1 (intermediate), B2 (Upper intermediate)

Proficient user: C1 (Advanced), C2 (Mastery)

MOTIVATION

Intrinsic – from within

Extrinsic – from external factors

Some factors that elicit motivation:

The goal

The society we live in

The people around us

Curiosity

BACKGROUND

When describing learners, their background is crucial. It has to be respected and understood.

This week we recorded an audio on the Vocaroo application where we talked about ourselves in terms of age, learner differences, language level, motivation, and background. If you'd like to hear it, here's the link: https://voca.ro/1b27Ucaj7UyG

That is all for this week, see you soon!
