Hello everyone! This is my last blog!! In this week's class, the teacher taught us the Jazz Chant technique.
The Jazz Chant technique, developed by Carolyn Graham,
is a method used to teach English as a second language (ESL) through rhythm,
repetition, and music. This approach combines spoken language with the rhythms
of traditional American jazz music, making learning more engaging and
memorable. Here are some key aspects of the Jazz Chant technique:
·
Rhythm and Repetition: Jazz Chants emphasize natural
spoken English rhythm and intonation. The repetitive nature of the chants helps
reinforce language patterns and vocabulary.
·
Listening and Speaking Skills: By chanting, students
improve their listening and speaking skills. The rhythm and beat help learners
grasp the stress and intonation patterns of English.
·
Engagement and Enjoyment: The musical aspect of Jazz
Chants makes learning fun and lively. This can increase student motivation and
participation.
·
Versatility: Jazz Chants can be adapted for different
levels and ages. They can focus on various language points, such as grammar
structures, vocabulary, and functional phrases.
·
Memory Aid: The combination of rhythm and repetition
aids in memory retention, helping students remember phrases and language
structures more effectively.
·
Cultural Exposure: Jazz Chants introduce students to
aspects of American culture, particularly the influence of jazz music, adding a
cultural dimension to language learning.
Example of a Jazz Chant
"Where’s the Cat?"
Where’s the cat?
Under the
chair.
Where’s the cat?
On the stairs.
Where’s the
cat?
In the hall.
Where’s the
cat?
On the wall.
In this chant, the rhythm and repetition help students practice prepositions of place while engaging with the rhythmic pattern of the chant.
Jazz Chants can be a powerful tool in the ESL classroom, offering a dynamic way to practice language skills and making the learning process more interactive and enjoyable.
In the second class we had our last presentations our classmates created different activities to use in the classroom.
